Before planning to buy a Rug, first you should know about the construction, material and various parameters to find the rug which is perfect for your home as well as for your pocket.

Types of Area Rugs:

There are many types of Area Rugs to choose and buy.

Hand Knotted Rugs – The Hand Knotted Rugs are weaved on a base of warp and weft tied on a loom. Then yarns tied around the warp to create knots and cut to create another knot. The ends of each knots are actually pile of a rug. The weaver create knots continuously based on a design graph to complete a warp line by line until the pattern/size of a rug gets completed. Very hard work and dedication involve and takes so many days to complete a rug. Hand Knotted rugs are most durable and long lasting, since it is tied by the knots.
Hand Tufted Rugs – The Hand tufted Rugs are weaved on a base of cotton fabric, stretched on an Iron frame. The drawing of a design being traced on the fabric and then tufts are created by pushing yarns on the fabric with the help of a gun. Since, no knots used to tie the yarn on fabric, the back is glued to keep the tufts intact with fabric. Tufted Rugs are cost effective, easy to make and fast production item then a Knotted Rugs.
Hand Woven Rugs – The Hand Woven Rugs are weaved on a base of yarn tied on a loom. The yarn are used to create the weft to cover the top and back of the rug without knots. That’s why the Hand Woven Rugs are thin, reversible and light weight.
Hand Crafted Rugs – Hand Crafted Rugs are made by stitching the patches of fabric, rug or leather together and then putting a plain fabric on the back.
Handloom Woven Rug – Hand Loom Rugs are woven on a vertical loom with a mounted warp. Then the shuttle gun used to create knots by wrapping yarns around the warp. Handloom Woven Rugs are basically made in plain, stripes, boxes and geometric pattern designs.
Machine Woven Rugs – Machine Woven Rugs are made by large power looms, which are electrically automated and controlled by computers. In previous days, there were restricted designs and no. of colors to weave on Machine, but currently any designs and any no. of colors are possible to weave. These rugs are produced very quickly in a large quantity and easy to handle, as these are light weight carpets.

Fibers used in Area Rugs:

Wool – Wool is natural fiber and comes from sheep and goats. It is naturally warm and soft. Wools are used in high end rugs.
Silk – Silk is also natural fiber and comes from cocoon of the silkworm. Silk is most expensive, strongest and hypoallergenic fiber and it is more soft and lush than woolen yarn.
Art Silk/Viscose – Art Silk / Viscose are manmade fibers and used in place of Silk to low down the cost of the rug.
Polyester / Polypropylene / Nylon – These yarn are manmade synthetic fibers which are used in Machine Woven Rugs.

Styles of Area Rugs:

Traditional Style Rugs – Traditional Rugs are originated in Persia and are typically made of wool, cotton, or silk. Beautiful ornate pattern with colorful Persian style flowers, medallions, scrolls motifs and elaborate borders come together to form one of the most luxurious floor coverings in the market. With such stately and sophisticated connotations, the color palette of traditional rugs is often pre-defined to reflect this. Rich maroon, deep sage, warm beige and opulent navy with injections of ink black colors are often used throughout all traditional rug designs. These rugs are weaved in high end knots.

Transitional Style Rugs – Transitional Rugs are the combination of both Traditional and Contemporary styles. It is inspiration of the Classic and traditional designs and then combine them with contemporary patterns in fashion forward designs and color ways, so these are as popular as Traditional Rugs. Transitional style rugs can be made in any color with no limit of design possibilities.

Best Way to Know the Measurement of Your Rug

When you are going to buy a rug for your bedroom / living room / hall / study room or any other place of your home, choose at least 1’ / 2’ shorter rug than the length / width of the smallest wall in the room and try to leave an equal amount of floor each sides.

There are plenty of options to put the rug in your room. Use measurement tape to know the exact size of the rug you want to put in your room. This way you can visualize the look of rug in your room.

Choosing Rug for your Bedroom

Measure your bed, plus add at least 2’, 3’ or more to cover the floor each side the bed (excluding head side) and then decide what size of rug you need for your bedroom.

Living Room Rug Guide

If using one rug, leave 18"-24" of floor on each side. Otherwise, furniture legs on or off the rug is your preference, and several smaller rugs to define spaces is also an option.

Dining Room Rug

The rug should extend at least 18" beyond the edge of the table so the chairs will still fit even when guests push back from the table (measure your table with all leaves in place). At least 18" of floor should frame the rug on all four sides. If possible, keep the rug small enough that buffets and china cabinets are not on the rug.
